To The Master (Le Tibebegnaw)

This tune is one of the most beloved songs in Ethiopia.

The original title of the song is “I Loved the Japanese Woman,” or “When I Was in the Far East.” Sergeant Shewan Dagne wrote the melody and Sergeant  Gezahegn Desta wrote the lyrics.  Shewan Dagne is one of the brave Ethiopian men who fought in Korea with United Nations military contingent in the 1950s.

While on duty in Korea, his battalion and other United Nations forces travelled to Japan on a ten-day break for R&R.  While there he had a memorable romance with a Japanese girl and the chance to listen and appreciate Japanese music.  He composed this beautiful tune to express the feelings and inspiration that he had during his brief stay in Japan.  The tune was popularized by the late Ethiopian star singer Tilahun Gesese. 

Based on his version, Girma Yifrashewa created this new arrangement of the song in commemoration of the life and contribution of when the beloved vocalist passed away.

ለጥበበኛው (To the Master)

ይህ እውቅ ዜማ በኢትዮጵያ በሰፊው ከሚታወቁና በጣም ተወዳጅ ዜማዎች ውስጥ አንዱ ነው፡፡ ዜማውም ጃፓንዋን ወድጄ (እሩቅ ምስራቅ ሳለሁ) በሚል ርእስ በሰፊው ይታወቃል፡፡

ለመጀመሪያ ጊዜ የተደረሰው በ ፶አለቃ ሸዋንዳኝ ወልደየስ ሲሆን የግጥሙ ደራሲ ፶አለቃ ገዛኸኝ ደስታ ናቸው፡፡ እንደ ፶አለቃ ሸዋንዳኝ ምስክርነት ይሄ ዜማ የጃፓን መሆኑን እና ከራሳቸው የግል ገጠመኝም ጋር እንደተያያዘ ያስረዳሉ፡፡ ፶አለቃ ሸዋንዳኝ በ1943 እና በ1946 ወደ ኮሪያ ከዘመቱት ኢትዮጵያዊያን ጀግኖች አንዱ ናቸው፡

በዚህም ዘመቻ ወቅት በኮሪያ ከሌሎች የተባበሩት መንግስታት ካሰማራቸው ወታደሮችጋር በመሆን ግዳጃቸውን በመወጣት ላይ እያሉ በአጠቃላይ የወታደሩ ክፍል ወደጃፓን ለ10 ቀን ለእረፍት በሄዱበት ወቅት ፶አለቃ ሸዋንዳኝ ከጃፓናዊት ወጣትጋር ባጋጠማቸው የማይረሳ የፍቅር ቆይታና የጃፓኑንም ሙዚቃ የማዳመጥ አጋጣሚ ስለነበራቸው በቆይታቸው የሰሟቸውን የጃፓን የሙዚቃ ቃና ከፍቅር ቆይታቸው ጋር በማያያዝ ይሄንን ውብ ዜማ አቅርበው ግጥሙን በታሪኩ ላይ በመመርኮዝ ፶አለቃ ገዛኸኝ ጽፈውታል፡፡ እንግዲህ ይህ ዜማ በሰፊው የኢትዮጵያ ሙዚቃ እንደሆነ ብዙ ሰዎች ቢያምኑም ፶አለቃ ሸዋንዳኝ ግን ዜማው መነሻው የጃፓን እንደሆነ ያስረዳሉ፡፡ እንግዲህ የዜማው አነሳስ ይህንን ከመሰለ ከዚያ በኋላ ተወዳጁና የኢትዮጵያ የምንጊዜም የድምፃዊያን ኮከብ ጥላሁን ገሠሠ አዚሞት (አቀንቅኖት) በኢትዮጵያዊያን ዘንድ ተወዳጅ ዜማ እንዲሆን አድርጎታል፡፡

ከዚህም በመነሳት ይህ ተወዳጅ ድምጻዊ ከዚህ ዓለም በሞት ሲለይ ይኽንን ተወዳጅ ዜማ በመውሰድ በአዲስ መልክና ቅንብር በማቅረብ ለተወዳጁ ድምጻዊ ጥላሁን ገሰሰ መታሰቢያ እንዲሆን ፒያኒስት ግርማ አቀናብሮታል፡፡
 

Union (Timret)

This music is based on wedding songs that we listen to frequently.

Timret, or “being united in matrimony,” is a natural phenomenon.  It is one of the major events that we go through in life and is a spiritual obligation. 

Therefore, out of respect for this major phenomenon, this music is dedicated to all who are united in marriage and those who plan to plan to be united in matrimony in the future. 

ጥምረት (Union)

ይህ ሙዚቃ መሰረት ያደረገው በሰርግ ጊዜ አዘውትረን በምንሰማቸው ዜማዎች ላይ በመመርኮዝ ነው፡፡

ጥምረት ወይንም በትዳር መጣመር የተፈጥሮ ህግና በህይወታችንም ከምናልፍባቸው አበይት ክንውኖች አንዱና መንፈሳዊም ግዴታ ነው፡፡

ለዚህም ታላቅ ክስተት ግርማ የበኩሉን አክብሮት ለመግለፅ እና ይህንንም ሙዚቃ በህይወታቸው ውስጥ በትዳር ላለፉና ወደፊትም በዚህ ሂደት ውስጥ ለሚኖሩ ሁሉ ማስታወሻ ሲያርግ በአክብሮት ነው፡፡
 

Hope (Tesfa)

This trio arrangement is based on the Ambassel Ethiopian scale. The idea is that hope is at the root of being human.  When we lose hope, we lose the meaning of our very existence.  Fundamentally, hope challenges frustrations and expectations and requires plenty of patience, and, therefore, living in hope gives life special meaning. “Hope is the food of life.”

ተስፋ (Hope)

ይህ የሶስትዮሽ (Trio) ቅንብር መሰረቱን ያደረገው አምባሰል በተሰኘው እና በጣም ተወዳጅ በሆነው የኢትዮጵያዊ ቅኝት ውስጥ ሲሆን፣ ሀሳቡም ተስፋ የሰው ልጅ የህልውናው መሰረት ሲሆን፤ ተስፋን በምናጣበት ጊዜ የመኖር ትርጉሙ የሚጠፋብን ይሆናል፡፡ በመሰረቱ ተስፋ እልህ አስጨራሽ እና ትዕግስት የሚጠይቅ በመሆኑ፣ የሰው ልጅ በተስፋ የመኖሩ ሂደት ለሕይወት ታላቅ ትርጉም ሰጪ ነው፡፡

“ ተስፋ የህይወት ምግብ ነው”፡፡

Forgiveness (Yikirbyenet)

Forgiving others is a spiritual gift that has a major implications on how human beings relate with each other and will remain as law in the human consciousness.

This spiritual, moral value is something that we practice and live day by day.

Forgiveness points us in the direction of love, consideration and compassion.

If we make forgiveness a core value in our daily lives, walk as spiritual witnesses, it will have a far reaching positive influence in our personal lives, as well as our surroundings.

We incorporate all such thoughts into prayer and longsuffering, forgiving hearts in order to bring hope and winning attitudes through this musical arrangement.

ይቅርባይነት (Forgiveness)

ይቅር ባይነት በሰው ልጆች ማህበራዊ ኑሮ እና ብሎም መንፈሳዊ ስጦታ እንደሆነ በትልቁ የተስተዋለ፣ የኖረ እና የሚኖርም ህግ እንደሆነ ይታመናል፡፡ ይኽውም መንፈሳዊ ሥነ-ምግባር በሰው ልጆች የዕለት ተዕለት የኑሮ ሂደቱ ውስጥ የምንለማመደውና የምንኖረው የህይወት ግዴታ ነው፡፡ በፍቅር፣ በመተሳሰብ እና በመተዛዘን ለመኖር ይቅርባይነት ከፍተኛውንና መሰረታዊ የሆነውን አቅጣጫ ያመላክተናል፡፡

በመሆኑም በማህበራዊ ህይወታችን እና በግል ሕይወታችን ይቅርባይነትን የህይወታችን መመሪያ ብናደርግ ዓለማችንም ሆነች እኛ በግል ህይወታችን የምንመኘውን መልካምና በፍቅር የተሞላ እንዲሁም አስደሳች ህይወት እንደምንኖር መንፈሳዊው ምስክርነት አስተምሮናል፡፡

በዚህ የሙዚቃ ቅንብር ይሄንኑ እንዳስሳለን ፀሎት፣ መከራን፣ ይቅር ባይነትን፣ በተጨማሪም ብሩህ ተስፋንና የአሸናፊነትን ስሜትን እንጎናፀፋለን፡፡

Blues (Engurguro)

Engurguro is a fusion of feelings that combines self-reflection, being lost in deep thoughts, our past and future life, dreams and aspirations. This quartet arrangement reflects old and current sentiments. 

This arrangement is respectfully dedicated to the late much admired playwright, Laureate Tsegaye Gebre Medhim, who has left us with unforgettable significant literary treasures. 

እንጉርጉሮ  (Blues)

እንጉርጉሮ፡- ከራስ ጋር መነጋገር በሃሳብ መውጣት መውረድን እንዲሁም ያለፈን መኖርና የወደፊትንም መናፈቅና ማለምን የሚያዋህድ የስሜት ሂደት ነው፡፡ ይኸውም የአራትዮሽ (Quartet) ቅንብር የታወቁና ነባር ዜማዎችን በመዳሰስ የማንጎራጎር ስሜትን ያንፀባርቃል፡፡

ይህንን የሙዚቃ ቅንበር በኢትዮጵያ የሥነ-ጽሁፍና የቲያትር ዘርፍ ውስጥ አንጋፋና በመላው የኢትዮጵያ ሕዝብ አዕምሮ ውስጥ የማይረሳ ሥነ-ጥበባዊ አሻራ ጥለው ከዚህ ዓለም በሞት ለተለዩን ለሎሬት ፀጋዬ ገ/መድህን ማስታወሻነት እንዲሆን ሲያደርግ ፒያኒስት ግርማ ከታላቅ አክብሮትና ምስጋና ጋር ነው፡፡

My Strong Will (Tenkaraw Menfese)

This song was first composed by Lieutenant Nuru Wondafrash, and is a very popular wedding song and widely enjoyed by Ethiopian society in general. This song is one of Girma’s very favorite tunes, and so he has attempted to present his piano quintet arrangement in a version that would appeal widely to Ethiopians and non-Ethiopians alike. 

With this composition Girma reflects upon his own life story and his musical adventures.  It is obvious that the life of a musician is a difficult and treacherous journey.  Through this song he was able to overcome all the hardship through patience, perseverance and his own Strong Will.

He has respectfully dedicated this special arrangement to the composer of the song Lieutenant Nuru Wondafrash.

ጠንካራው መንፈሴ (My Strong Will)

ጠንካራው መንፈሴ የተሰኘው ዜማ መጀመሪያ በ፻አለቃ ኑሩ ወንዳፍራሽ የተደረሰ እውቅ የሠርግ ዜማ ሲሆን፣ በማህበረሰቡም ውስጥ ዘወትር ከሚዜሙ ዜማዎች አንዱ ነው፡፡ ይህ ዜማ ለፒያኒስት ግርማም ልዩ ስሜት ከሚሰጡት ዜማዎች መካከል አንዱ ነው፡፡ ከዚህም በመነሳት ግርማ በዚህ የፒያኖ አምስትዮሽ (Quintet) ይህንን ዜማ በራሱ ሙዚቃዊ ፍልስፍና አዲስ ሕይወት በመዝራት ዜማው በይበልጥና በብዙ የሀገራችንም ሕዝቦችና እንዲሁም ለውጪ ሀገር ሰዎች ዘወትር እንዲሰማና አለማቀፍ ይዘት እንዲኖረውም ለማድረግ ሞክሯል፡፡

በዚህ ቅንብር ውስጥ ግርማ እራሱንና የሙዚቃ ህይወቱን ውጣ ውረዶች ለማንፀባረቅ ችሏል፡፡ የሙዚቃ ህይወት በጣም አስቸጋሪ እና ከፍተኛ ፈተና ያለው መሆኑ ግልፅ ቢሆንም በትዕግስት እና በፅናት እንዲሁም በጠንካራ መንፈስ (Strong will) መወጣት የቻለበትን ልምዱን በሙዚቃው ውስጥ አስታውሷል፡፡

ይህንንም የሙዚቃ ቅንብር ለዜማው ደራሲ ለ፻አለቃ ኑሩ ወንዳፍራሽ መታሰቢያ እንዲሆን በአክብሮት አቅርቧል፡፡

The Shepherd with The Flute (Eregnaw Bale Washint)

This music was first composed by Professor Ashenafi Kebede and this current arrangement has been converted to a piano concerto by Girma and performed by Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra in tribute to the famous composer.

ዕረኛው ባለዋሽንት የመጀመሪያ ድርሰቱ በፕ/ር አሸነፊ ከበደ የተደረሰና ከዚያም ይህንኑ የተዋጣ የሙዚቃ ድርሰት ዕውቁን የሙዚቃ ደራሲን ፕ/ር አሸናፊን ለመዘከር ወደ ፒያኖ ቅንብርነት ከተለወጠ በኋላ በዚህ በኦርኬስትራው ቅንብርም የምንሰማው ፒያኒስት ግርማ ለፒያኖ ያቀናበረውንና ታላቅ እውቅናን ያገኘበትን የፒያኖ ድርሰት የሶፊያ ፊልሃርሞኒክ ኦርኬስትራ የተጫወተውን ድንቅ የሙዚቃ ሥራ ነው፡፡
